July 1st of 2021 marks the 100th anniversary of the creation of the Communist Party of China (CPC), also known as the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), is the sole governing political party of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) with minor parties under its leadership called the United Front. Chen Duxiu became the first General Secretary and elected leader of CPC, in leadership with other communists. Then in 1949, Chairman Mao Zedong became the first president of PRC as leadership of CPC.
Despite their differences, early on, the CPC united with The Kuomintang (KMT); China’s largest revolutionary and republican nationalist party receive military training and build recruitment.

The CPC fought against three enemies during WWII—the KMT, the invading Japanese, and the old Qing government and assorted warlords (as well as white colonialists), all of whom had bigger armies, more and better equipment, and were much better funded. All the CPC had at that point was a peasant fighting force and old WWI-type weapons.
They strengthened their support and fighting base by not only politicizing class consciousness, but also practicing what they preached. For example, they always asked permission if they needed something from a peasant and never stole a thing, unlike the KMT who treated the peasants as if they owed them something. Many peasants therefore did not tell the KMT where the CPC were hiding or give them up to the reactionary forces. That’s also part of why the CPC was so successful at fighting—because they had the protection of the masses.

Another reason was strategy. While the KMT fought a conventional war, the CPC retreated to the mountains and countryside and only fought when they were certain of victory, usually by luring KMT or Japanese forces onto a CPC base and entrapping them. With that method, they were able to recruit from the enemy’s forces as well as living off the enemy, i.e. eating from the enemy’s rations, taking their modern weapons and so on.
Whether training and arming the poor and working classes Colonized people in the countryside to overthrow imperialist landlords, or adapting to the colonial capitalistic world, they always maintained their political line and mission, to liberate the Chinese masses, gain self-determination, and become the dual contending power in the world they are today. Current President Xi Jinping of PRC recently stated that China will not be bullied or oppressed ever again.
