Sandman - Read the Windows Hibernation File

This is a pretty new tool and a very cool one, Hibernation is a fairly new feature for Windows so it’s good to see a new tool targeting that.

Microsoft provides a feature called Hibernation also know as suspend to disk that aims to save the system state into an undocumented file called hiberfil.sys. This file contains all the physical memory saved by the Operating System and aims to be restored by the user the next time the computer is powered on. Live forensics analysis is used to use physical memory dump to recover information on the targeted machine.

One of the main problems is to obtain a readable physical memory dump, hibernation is an efficient way to save and load physical memory. Hibernation analysis has notable advantages. System activity is totally frozen, therefore coherent data is acquired and no software tool is able to block the analysis. The system is left perfectly functional after analysis, with no side effects.

The hibernation file opens two valuable doors:

The first one is forensics analysis for defensive computing. Hibernation is an efficient and easy way to get a physical memory dump. But the main issue about it was: How to read the hiberfil.sys? This is why SandMan was born.

The second one is a new concept we will be introducing and called “offensics” which is a portmanteau from “offensive” and “forensics”. If we can read hiberfil.sys, can we rewrite it? The answer is: Yes, with SandMan you can.

Sandman is a C Library that aims to read the hibernation file, regardless of Windows version. Thus, it makes possible to do forensics live analysis on the dumped file.

Pass-The-Hash Toolkit v1.3

The Pass-The-Hash Toolkit contains utilities to manipulate the Windows Logon Sessions maintained by the LSA (Local Security Authority) component. These tools allow you to list the current logon sessions with its corresponding NTLM credentials (e.g.: users remotely logged in thru Remote Desktop/Terminal Services), and also change in runtime the current username, domain name, and NTLM hashes (YES, PASS-THE-HASH on Windows!).

Pass-The-Hash Toolkit

Pass-The-Hash Toolkit is comprised of three tools: IAM.EXE, WHOSTHERE.EXE and GENHASH.EXE.

GENHASH.EXE
This is just a utility that uses some undocumented Windows functions to generate the LM and NT hash of a password. This tool is useful to test IAM.EXE and WHOSTHERE.EXE and perhaps to do some other things. Pretty simple and small tool.

IAM.EXE
This tools allows you to change your current NTLM credentials without having the cleartext password but the hashes of the password. The program receives a username, domain name and the LM and NT hashes of the password; using this it will change in memory the NTLM credentials associated with the current windows logon session. After the program performs this operation, all outbound network connections to services that use for authentication the NTLM credentials of the currently logged on user will utilize the credentials modified by IAM.EXE.

WHOSTHERE.EXE
This tools will list logon sessions with NTLM credentials (username,domain name, LM and NT hashes). Logon sessions are created by windows services that log in using specific users, remote desktop connections, etc. This tool has many uses, one that i think is interesting: Let’s say you compromised a Windows Server that is part of a Windows Domain (e.g.: Backup server) but is NOT the domain controller.

NetworkMiner - Passive Sniffer & Packet Analysis Tool

NetworkMiner is a passive network sniffer/packet capturing tool for Windows with an easy to use interface. It can detect operating systems, sessions, hostnames, open ports etc. without putting any traffic on the network. NetworkMiner can also parse PCAP files for off-line analysis.

NetworkMiner makes use of OS fingerprinting databases from both p0f (by Michal Zalewski) and Ettercap (by Alberto Ornaghi and Marco Valleri) in order to do as correct passive OS fingerprinting as possible. NetworkMiner also uses the MAC-vendor list from Nmap (Fyodor).

The purpose of NetworkMiner is to collect data about hosts on the network rather than to collect data regarding the traffic on the network. The main view is host centric (information grouped per host) rather than packet centric (information showed as a list of packets/frames).

NetworkMiner can extract files transferred over the network by parsing a PCAP file or by sniffing traffic directly from the network. This is a neat function that can be used to extract and save media files (such as audio or video files) which are streamed across a network.

Another very useful feature is that the user can search sniffed or stored data for keywords. NetworkMiner allows the user to insert arbitrary string or byte-patterns that shall be searched for with the keyword search functionality.

A feature the author wants to include in future versions of NetworkMiner is to use statistical methods to do protocol identification (protocol fingerprinting) of a TCP session or UDP data. This means that instead of looking at the port number to guess which protocol is used on top of the TCP/UDP packet NetworkMiner will identify the correct protocol based on the TCP/UDP packet content. In this way NetworkMiner will be able to identify protocols even if the service is run on a non-standard port.

Bruter 1.0 Released - Parallel Windows Password Brute Forcing Tool

Bruter 1.0 BETA 1 has been released. Bruter is a parallel login brute-forcer. This tool is intended to demonstrate the importance of choosing strong passwords. The goal of Bruter is to support a variety of services that allow remote authentication.

Bruter is a tool for the Win32 platform only.

Metasploit Framework v3.1 Released for Download

Ah Metasploit development cycle seems to be picking up, I guess with greater community support the bugs get ironed out and the new features introduced faster.

Good to see an update so soon after Metasploit Framework v3.0 was released.

I keep closely up to date with Metasploit as it’s pretty much the best free tool out there right now, and certainly the most exciting along with Nmap.

The latest version features a graphical user interface, full support for the Windows platform, and over 450 modules, including 265 remote exploits. Metasploit 3.1 consolidates a year of research and development, integrating ideas and code from some of the sharpest and most innovative folks in the security research community.

The graphical user interface is a major step forward for Metasploit users on the Windows platform. Development of this interface was driven by Fabrice Mourron and provides a wizard-based exploitation system, a graphical file and process browser for the Meterpreter payloads, and a multi-tab console interface. “The Metasploit GUI puts Windows users on the same footing as those running Unix by giving them access to a console interface to the framework” said H D Moore, who worked with Fabrice on the GUI project.

The latest incarnation of the framework includes a bristling arsenal of exploit modules that are sure to put a smile on the face of every information warrior. Notable exploits in the 3.1 release include a remote, unpatched kernel-land exploit for Novell Netware, written by toto, a series of 802.11 fuzzing modules that can spray the local airspace with malformed frames, taking out a wide swath of wireless-enabled devices, and a battery of exploits targeted at Borland’s InterBase product line. “I found so many holes that I just gave up releasing all of them”, said Ramon de Carvalho, founder of RISE Security, and Metasploit contributor.

Metasploit runs on all modern operating systems, including Linux, Windows, Mac OS X, and most flavors of BSD. Metasploit has been used on a wide range of hardware platforms, from massive Unix mainframes to the tiny Nokia n800 handheld. Users can access Metasploit using the tab-completing console interface, the Gtk GUI, the command line scripting interface, or the AJAX-enabled web interface. The Windows version of Metasploit includes all software dependencies and a selection of useful networking tools.
